Retirees Embrace Serenity, Ditch Busy Travel

Forty years ago, the world was my playground. Bunge jumping? Bring it on! Scuba diving in exotic reefs? Absolutely! But time, as it does, has shifted my travel priorities. The adrenaline rush has been replaced by a yearning for serenity, beauty, and affordability. I’m still a nomad at heart, now a Senior Nomad, exploring the world on different terms.

Gone are the days of chasing fleeting excitement. Now, I crave breathtaking scenery for my morning walks. Walkable cities with efficient public transportation are a must-have for my strolling explorations. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love destinations where my dollar stretches further? The Mexican Riviera, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia have become my budget-friendly havens. Last summer we visited Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. We loved them all. You can read about our Bulgarian adventures here.

Fast, reliable internet is still crucial for staying connected with loved ones and managing life back home. While I embrace new experiences throughout the year, my ultimate quest is for perfect weather. Imagine basking in sunshine-filled days for months on end – yes, please!

Finding communities of like-minded expats with similar interests adds another layer of joy. In Mazatlan, pickleball and padel keep us active, but replicating that everywhere isn’t feasible. So, we compromise. We choose a continent for 5-6 months, immersing ourselves in its unique charms. Renting an Airbnb for a month cuts costs significantly, offering a home base to explore from. Public transportation becomes our chariot, whisking us away on exciting day trips. And many days, the simple pleasure of sipping coffee at a local cafe, absorbing the sights and sounds, fills my soul with contentment.

My journey as a Senior Nomad might not be about adrenaline-pumping adventures anymore, but it’s filled with new discoveries, meaningful connections, and a deep appreciation for the beauty and peace the world offers. Many seniors, like me, once loved fast-paced travel. Now, they seek peace. Slow travel offers a chance to connect with places and people. This mindful style of travel lets retirees recharge and create lasting memories.
