Expat Wars: Beach Bum vs. Globetrotter (We Tried Both)
The Lazy Expat vs. the Travel Junkie
Picture this: my husband, Jeff, and I sipping margaritas on our Mexican patio, smugly patting ourselves on the back for nailing this whole retirement thing. We were full-fledged expats, living the beach life dream in Mazatlán. Sun, sand, cheap tacos – what more could we want?
Turns out, a little more. The routine, while glorious at first, started to feel…well, routine. We missed the thrill of exploring new places, the energy of cobblestone streets, and the challenge of not always understanding the menu.
So, we did what any slightly insane retirees would do: we hatched a plan. Six months in Mexico, then a repositioning cruise (sort by price per night to get your 25 USD per night deal) to Europe for another six months of adventure. The ultimate hybrid retirement experiment was born!
Round 1: The Beach Bum’s Bliss
Ah, the expat life. It’s got its perks:
- Slow Living Mastery: We became pros at finding the best coffee shop, deciphering bus schedules, and haggling at the market like locals.
- Community Vibes: You build a little family, fellow expats who get your quirks and share insider tips on everything from doctors to where to find the good cheese.
- Cost of Living Win: Stretching your retirement dollars further feels pretty darn amazing, especially when it involves ocean views.
But then the cracks start to show…
- Even paradise gets predictable. You crave a new museum, a bookstore you can browse, heck, even a rainy day feels exciting.
- “Stuff” Accumulates: Turns out, even minimalists acquire things when they settle down. Our condo started feeling cluttered, not zen.
- Obligation Overload: Suddenly you’re on the neighborhood committee, pickle ball every morning, volunteering to help with the turtle rescue… it’s rewarding, but also ties you down.
Round 2: The Travel Junkie’s High
Trading our beach chairs for backpacks was exhilarating! Europe, here we come!
- The Wonder of the New: Every day was a feast for the senses – charming villages, food we couldn’t pronounce, the thrill of slightly getting lost.
- Embracing the Unexpected: Missed trains, accidental detours, language mishaps…it becomes part of the adventure, not a source of stress.
- Minimalism for the Win: Living out of a carry on suitcase forces you to realize how little you actually need to be happy.
Yet, even constant travel has its downsides…
- Decision Fatigue: Which town next? Airbnb or hotel? It sounds fun, but after a while, even simple choices feel overwhelming.
- Budget Battles: Europe ain’t cheap, folks. Those dreamy cafes and train tickets add up, even with our best budgeting tricks.
- Loneliness Strikes: Sure, you meet people, but the deep friendships take time to build, and sometimes you just miss your people.
The Hybrid Experiment: Our Chaotic Masterpiece
Turns out, neither extreme was the perfect fit. We craved the stability of our Mexican home base with the spice of European adventures sprinkled in. Here’s how we make it work (most of the time):
- Repositioning Cruise Hack: These cruises, where ships move between continents, are insanely affordable. I stalk cruise websites, sorting by price per night – anything under $30 is a steal! (sort by price per night to get your 25 USD per night deal)
- Rental Hustle: Listing our condo on Airbnb covers most of our travel costs while we’re gone.
- Slow Travel FTW: We spend a month or two in each European country, getting a feel for the place, not just ticking off tourist sights.
Traditional Expat vs Traveling Retiree: Who Wins?
It’s a tie! And that’s the beauty of it. Retirement is about having the freedom to experiment, to ditch what doesn’t work, and to embrace a little bit of chaos along the way. So, which side are you on? Beach bum for life, or incurable travel junkie?
