We Ditched “Normal” Retirement for a Wild Ride
Forget rocking chairs and bingo! We swapped our predictable retirement plan for a wild hybrid adventure: six months as expats in one spot, six months roaming the globe as senior nomads. Think cozy cabins in Norway (with a side of cat allergies), unexpected bus “adventures,” and discovering that Norwegians take their outdoor living seriously.

What’s a Hybrid Retirement?
Picture this: we spend half the year soaking up Mexican sunshine and vibrant culture in our condo. Then, the wanderlust kicks in! We pack light and set off on extended journeys – home swaps in Europe, slow travel through Southeast Asia, you name it. It’s the best of both worlds: the comfort of a home base with the thrill of unlimited exploration.
Home Swaps: Cozy Cabins, Cat Encounters, and Hot Tub Surprises
Our Norwegian home exchange was pure magic. We traded our Mexican digs for a cabin with fjord views, a crackling fireplace, and a luxurious hot tub (score!). Our hosts even left us wine and treats – talk about hospitality! Then there was Donkey, the “outdoor” cat who decided rainy days were for snuggles…and triggering my allergies.
Grocery Mishaps and a Norwegian Workout

Norwegian supermarkets became our comedy hour. Deciphering labels was like a puzzle, and don’t get me started on the fermented fish! But those fjord-side hikes? Talk about a free, scenic workout! We embraced the Norwegian “friluftsliv” (outdoor living) spirit, even taking the occasional icy dip (brrr!).
The Bus That Wasn’t (and Oslo on Foot)
Sometimes, the best travel memories come from unexpected mishaps. Like that time we waited forever for a bus, only to learn weekend schedules are… different. Thank goodness for friendly locals and strong legs! We ended up exploring Oslo entirely on foot, racking up serious mileage (and discovering hidden cafes).
New Friendships, New Perspectives
Home exchanges are about more than houses. Our Norwegian hosts made us feel incredibly welcome. We gained insights into their culture, learned some hilarious Norwegian slang, and left with a warm feeling that transcends borders.
Think a hybrid retirement sounds impossible? Think again! We’re proof it’s not only doable but incredibly rewarding.
