From Rome to Asiago: A Delicious Escape

Imagine this: swapping your flip-flops for sturdy hiking boots and trading your beachfront view for a breathtaking panorama of the Italian Alps. No overpriced gelato tours, no elbowing your way through tourist traps… just stunning scenery, mouthwatering cheese (more on that later!), and the freedom to explore like a local. That’s the magic of a home exchange – and after our recent escapade in Asiago, we’re officially hooked (and maybe a little bit addicted to Asiago cheese)!

Asiago: Your Gateway to Northern Italy (and a Cheese Lover’s Paradise)

Italian Alps in Asiago, Italy

Sure, Venice and Rome are legendary, but Asiago? This charming mountain town (famous for its wheel-shaped, slightly pungent, and utterly delicious cheese) stole our hearts. Think breathtaking Alpine vistas, easy day trips to Verona, Padua, and even Lake Garda, and enough cheese varieties to make your taste buds do a happy dance. Plus, with our host Luciano’s slightly dented but surprisingly speedy Audi at our disposal, we were perfectly equipped for adventure (and avoiding the occasional rogue sheep on the mountain roads!).

Foodie Delights, War Memorials, and Rain-Induced Opera Performances (Seriously!)

Worlkd War 1 Memorial in Asiago, Italy

Asiago offered a delightful mix of experiences. We feasted on local delicacies at budget-friendly pizzerias (Magia and De Tata, we still dream of you!). We learned about the region’s fascinating (and sometimes somber) World War I history at the Asiago War Memorial. And yes, those springtime showers meant we mastered the art of “spontaneous operatic performances” for our fellow cheese enthusiasts (turns out, belting out arias in a downpour is surprisingly liberating!).

Goodbye Tiny Hotel Rooms, Hello Home Exchange Bliss (and a Cultural Exchange We Won’t Soon Forget)

After a few claustrophobic nights in cramped hotel rooms on Lake Garda, the spaciousness and homey charm of Luciano’s home was a revelation. Home exchanges offer unbeatable comfort and convenience, giving you a true taste of living like a local, not a tourist. The absolute highlight? Sharing a homemade meal with Luciano’s family, complete with laughter, broken Italian, and enough cheese to feed a small army. It was a priceless cultural exchange that warmed our hearts (and bellies) more than any souvenir ever could.

Slow Travel vs. Crowded Rome (There’s a Clear Winner, and it Doesn’t Involve Colosseums)

We’ve all done the whirlwind Rome trip: the crowds, the lines, the feeling of being swept along in a tourist tide. But our Asiago escape proved that Italy has so much more to offer. We savored each destination at our own pace, strolled cobblestone streets hand-in-hand without the need to dodge selfie sticks, and discovered hidden gems like charming cafes and breathtaking viewpoints. This is the joy of slow travel and intentional living, and we wouldn’t trade it for all the Colosseums in the world.

Hybrid Retirement Adventures ( Home Exchange #1, Cheese Coma Next?)

This Italian getaway is just the beginning of our hybrid retirement adventure. Six months spent living like locals around the globe, and six months cozying up in our Mazatlan home base – it’s the ultimate way to keep life exciting and our cheese cravings satisfied.  Think cozy cabins in Norway and fjord-side picnics next? You bet! Turns out, retirement never has to be boring, especially when it involves exploring new cultures, delicious food, and maybe even a little cheese-induced mischief (long story involving a suspicious border guard and a very convincing Italian accent!)

Dream of ditching the tourist trail? Want to stretch your retirement budget further (and maybe indulge in your cheese obsession)? Home exchange might be the answer!
