Mazatlecos Escape to Mexico City!
Hey there, fellow adventurers! Lidia and Jeff here, your favorite part-time expats in Mazatlan. We recently traded our usual beachside margaritas for a whirlwind week in Mexico City, and let me tell you, this city girl (Lidia speaking!) felt right at home!

Trading Beaches for Bustling Avenues
We escaped the Semana Santa crowds in Mazatlan for a taste of the big city life. Let’s just say, this Mazatleca felt a bit provincial after a week in swanky Polanco! Everywhere we turned, there were blooming trees (hello, gorgeous springtime!), fancy shops, and a seemingly endless supply of world-class restaurants. Seriously, we were 400 meters away from Pujol, one of the top-rated restaurants in the world! (Though our budget screamed for tacos instead!)
From Mazatlan Beaches to Mexico City Museums
We dove headfirst into the cultural scene, hitting up some incredible museums – and guess what? Museo Jumex, Museo Soumaya, and even the Zoo were all free to explore! Talk about a budget traveler’s dream. We spent hours admiring contemporary art at Jumex, marveling at Slim’s vast collection in Soumaya, and making new friends at the zoo (the monkeys were particularly intrigued by Jeff’s beach hair!).

Our days were filled with exploring sprawling parks like Chapultepec, browsing through upscale malls (because, window shopping is free, right?), and soaking up the vibrant energy of the city. Every corner revealed something new – from street musicians serenading passersby to bustling markets bursting with colors and scents.
A Foodie’s Paradise (Even on a Budget)
Let’s talk food! While Pujol remained a culinary fantasy, we feasted on delicious street tacos, discovered cozy cafes filled with digital nomads, and indulged in churros that would make a Mazatlecan churro vendor proud. The variety was mind-blowing, and our tastebuds were definitely not complaining!

Big City Adventures, Small Town Feels
Despite the crowds and constant buzz, Mexico City surprised us with its pockets of tranquility. Morning walks through Polanco’s tree-lined streets felt like a world away from the rush hour traffic. Sharing a bench with locals in a quiet plaza, we almost forgot we were in one of the world’s largest metropolises.
We returned to Mazatlan with a newfound appreciation for our laid-back beach life, but also with a lingering itch for our next city escape. There’s something exhilarating about the anonymity of a big city, the endless possibilities around every corner.
So, if you’re ever looking for a break from the beach (or the Semana Santa crowds!), consider Mexico City. Just be prepared to feel a little…provincial!
