1. The ATM Fees Fiasco: Beryl’s Bangkok Blues
Beryl’s post about encountering hefty ATM fees in Thailand struck a chord with many members, who shared similar experiences and frustrations. While some, like Greg Bewick and Richard Harris, pointed out that these fees have been around for a while, others, like Beryl herself, felt that the charges seemed higher than in the past.
2. Why Do ATM Fees Exist? (A Tale of Two Banks)
Those pesky ATM fees are a result of a two-pronged attack on your wallet:
- Your Home Bank’s Fees: Your bank might charge a foreign transaction fee (typically 1-3% of the withdrawal amount) and/or a flat fee for using an ATM outside their network.
- The ATM Owner’s Fees: The bank that owns the ATM in Thailand will also likely charge a fee, which can range from 220 baht (around $6 USD) to even higher amounts, depending on the bank and the withdrawal amount.
3. Thailand’s ATM Fees Landscape
- Varying Fees: Different banks in Thailand have different fee structures. Some might charge a flat fee, while others might have tiered fees based on the withdrawal amount.
- Withdrawal Limits: ATMs in Thailand often have limits on the amount you can withdraw per transaction, typically around 20,000 to 30,000 baht.
4. Savvy Solutions: Outsmarting Those ATM Fees
- Fee-Free ATM Cards: Several members, like Jean Bolger and others, recommended using ATM cards from banks that reimburse ATM fees, such as Charles Schwab, Fidelity, and Betterment (for US residents).
- Wise Card: Marguerite Hoiby and others suggested using a Wise card, which can offer lower fees and better exchange rates than traditional bank cards. However, as Heather Taylor pointed out, you might need the physical card for ATM withdrawals.
- Cash is King: Myra Gold and others recommended bringing a larger amount of cash and exchanging it at currency exchange offices, which can sometimes offer better rates than ATMs.
- Minimize Withdrawals: Withdraw larger amounts less frequently to reduce the overall fees. (Angela McPherson Otula and others suggested this.)
- Negotiate with Your Home Bank: Some banks might be willing to waive or reduce foreign transaction fees, especially if you have a good relationship with them.
- Use Credit Cards Where Possible: While cash is still king in many places in Thailand, credit cards are becoming more widely accepted, especially in larger cities and tourist areas. (Jean-Pierre Elrif mentioned that some places might charge a small fee for credit card use.)
5. Our Experiences: Tales from the ATM Trenches
Jeff and I use the Charles Schwab debit card, and it’s been a game-changer for avoiding those pesky ATM fees. Schwab reimburses ALL ATM fees worldwide, no matter how outrageous!
We even used it in Ushuaia, Argentina, where the ATM fee was almost as much as the withdrawal itself! 🤯 But guess what? Schwab refunded it, no questions asked. 😎
So, if you’re tired of those ATM fees eating into your travel budget, consider getting a Schwab debit card. It’s a simple and effective way to keep more money in your pocket for exploring the world.

6. Beyond Thailand: ATM Fees Around the World
ATM fees are a global phenomenon, and Thailand is certainly not the only country where you’ll encounter them. As Yan Fahey mentioned, even in countries like Albania, ATM fees can be significant. It’s always wise to research ATM fees and withdrawal limits before you travel to any new destination.
By being prepared, utilizing savvy strategies, and embracing a bit of financial flexibility, you can minimize those pesky ATM fees and keep your travel budget happy, even in the land of smiles.
