All-Inclusive Egypt: Paradise Found (and Lost) on a Budget
We Splurged on a Cheap Egyptian Resort (and Then Reality Hit)

Picture this: sipping cocktails by a pristine pool, endless buffets, and a 5-star Egyptian resort…all for less than our monthly Mazatlan grocery bill. Thanks to off-season deals we were living the high life on a shoestring budget. But, as seasoned travelers (and occasional cheapskates), we knew the real adventure awaited beyond the resort walls. We quickly learned that “Welcome to Alaska” is the unofficial Egyptian greeting, and our ability to politely refuse endless boat ride offers became a survival skill. Time to trade pampering for pyramids, see if we could navigate Egypt on our own, and discover if our budget travel skills were as sharp as we thought.
All-Inclusive Paradise…With a Few Quirks
Don’t get us wrong; the resort was fantastic! The staff learned our drink orders by day two, the food was surprisingly good, and let’s just say we embraced the unlimited desserts with reckless abandon. But even paradise has its quirks. Think aggressive towel hawkers at the pool, questionable nightly “entertainment,” and fellow guests whose idea of relaxation involved very little clothing.
“Independent Travel”: A Comedy of Errors
Feeling confident (and maybe slightly smug about our budget savvy), we ventured beyond the resort. Boy, were we humbled! From haggling taxi fares in broken Arabic to dodging donkeys on the highway, it was a far cry from our usual carefree travel style. Turns out, Egypt on your own takes some serious planning, patience, and a good sense of humor. And who knew crossing a highway with no warning signs could be the ultimate cardio workout?
When “Budget-Friendly” Isn’t Always What It Seems
We quickly discovered the hidden costs. Tipping is expected everywhere in Egypt, even for the smallest services. Entrance fees to the iconic sights added up fast. And don’t even get me started on the time Jeff tried to buy a “genuine” papyrus scroll at a tourist trap…let’s just say we paid dearly for that souvenir. Let’s just say the local pharmacy became our best friend, providing mysterious remedies that may or may not have been more effective than Pepto-Bismol.
Embracing the Chaos: Mishaps That Made the Trip
Sure, we ended up on a never-ending boat ride around Elephantine Island, desperately trying to communicate with a non-English-speaking captain as we drifted further from shore. We may have accidentally offended a shopkeeper with our terrible haggling skills. And let’s not forget the Cairo traffic jam, where lanes are merely a suggestion, and pedestrians play a real-life game of Frogger. But the highlight? Picture Lidia snorkeling in the Red Sea, suddenly swarmed by a ravenous school of fish who clearly thought a hard boiled egg was a gourmet feast!

Was It Worth It? The Hybrid Retirement Perspective
Absolutely! The resort experience offered a much-needed reset, a chance to indulge without breaking the bank during a time of global inflation. Exploring Egypt independently gave us a true taste of the culture, incredible sights, and a newfound respect for tour guides. It’s a reminder that hybrid retirement is about balance – moments of luxury, offset by adventurous budget travel.
