My Retirement Adventure: From Mexico to the World

I always envisioned retirement as relaxing in one place. Then, Mexico happened! At first, I embraced the Mazatlán expat life. But the travel bug bit hard, and soon I found myself craving more. My retirement has morphed into a thrilling hybrid adventure I never could have predicted. Here’s my story…

Chapter 1: Falling in Love with Mazatlán

Mexico’s warmth and affordability drew me in. I fell for Mazatlán’s beaches, vibrant culture, and welcoming community. Learning Spanish, exploring local markets – I wasn’t just visiting, I was living. The easy visa process made it possible to stay long-term.

  • Budget-Friendly Paradise: I discovered that living comfortably in Mazatlán costs way less than back home. Buying a beachfront condo was pretty affordable.
  • Finding My Mazatlán Niche: I wasn’t into the touristy Malecón scene. Instead, I focused on walking, swimming, playing pickle ball and pop tennis in Cerritos.

Chapter 2: The Travel Bug Bites

After few months, a familiar restlessness started creeping in. While I loved Mazatlán, the world felt big again. Could I make retirement more than just settling in one spot?

  • The Six-Month Experiment: I decided to split my time: 6 months based in Mazatlán, 6 months exploring. This way, I could keep my home base and all the things I loved, but satisfy my wanderlust too.
  • Retiree Travel, My Way: Slow travel became my thing. Spending a month or more in each place let me go deeper, not just rush through sights. I’d rent apartments, shop at markets, and learn the rhythm of a place – a true budget traveler.
  • Embracing the Unexpected: Sometimes, the cheapest flight took me somewhere I’d never planned on! I discovered hidden gems in Southeast Asia and made friends over shared meals.

Hybrid Retirement: The Best of Everything

Now, I wouldn’t trade my lifestyle for anything. I have the stability of my Mazatlán home, the excitement of exploring new places, and the flexibility to blog a bit if I want. It’s taken me way outside my comfort zone at times, but that’s the beauty of retirement on your own terms!
