How We Afford 4-6 Months of Travel Every Year
I’ll admit it – my husband Jeff and I have an insatiable case of wanderlust. But we’re also retirees on a budget. So how do we manage those epic 4-6 month adventures abroad each year?
It’s not about winning the lottery or scrimping on every penny. It’s a mix of strategic choices, a bit of creative thinking, and whole lot of flexibility. Ready to unlock our travel budget secrets? Let’s dive in!

1. Transatlantic Travel on a Dime
Getting to Europe or Asia is the priciest part and the most exhausting part. Here’s how we tackle it:
- Points Are Your Friend: We strategically sign up for travel credit cards with hefty sign-up bonuses. We aim for enough points to cover one round-trip flight per year.
- Caveat: This only works if you’re financially responsible! Paying off the card in full each month is key.
- Repositioning Cruises: Love being on the water? These one-way voyages are often dirt cheap compared to round-trip options. For destination select repositioning or transatlantic. Bonus: your “hotel” travels with you! We’ve crossed the Atlantic, the Pacific and even the Panama Canal this way.
2. Finding the Cheapest Entry Point
Forget those direct flights to popular cities. We use tools like Google Flights to find the overall cheapest flight to our chosen continent, even if it lands us in a lesser-known city. From there, budget airlines and local trains become our best friends.
Example: Instead of flying directly to Paris, we might land in London, then hop over to France by bus or budget flight.

3. The Art of the “Home Base”
We’re not hostel hoppers. Once on a continent, we stay PUT for a month (or more!) in one central location. This gives us a few HUGE advantages:
- Lower Rental Rates: Most Airbnb or Vrbo hosts offer steep discounts for monthly stays.
- No Packing/Unpacking Madness: Unpack once, settle in, and get a feel for the local life.
- Day Trip Central: We explore the surrounding region by local transport, leaving our luggage behind.

4. Accommodation Hacks (Beyond Just Booking.com)
Hotels are rarely budget-friendly for long stays. We mix it up:
- HomeExchange.com: Trading our Mazatlán condo for a European apartment? It’s not as crazy as it sounds! Platforms like HomeExchange make it happen. Use code lidia-33697 to receive a sign up bonus.
- TrustedHousesitters: If you love pets or don’t mind caring for plants, this can be an incredible way to score FREE accommodation (and sometimes even car access!). TRUSTED15 – Coupon 15% Discount Code for all NEW annual memberships. Valid until 30 June 2025
- Alternative Options: Some religious institutions (monasteries) offer simple rooms, and you can even stay in farmhouses in exchange for a few hours of help each day.
5. Earning While Exploring: The “Hybrid” Retirement Approach
For us, this is the secret sauce:
- Rental Income: When not home exchanging, we rent out our Mazatlán condo on Airbnb. Our rental income covers our rent in Europe and beyond.
Additional Tips
- Off-Season is Your Friend: Shoulder seasons (spring/fall) offer a sweet spot of decent weather and lower prices.
- Cook Most Meals: Eating out every day adds up FAST. Even a simple kitchen setup lets you save on food.
- When eating out – choose “Meal of the Day”
- Embrace Public Transport: Trains, buses, trams – these become part of the adventure!
- Local Perks: Many countries offer senior discounts on attractions and transport. Research ahead of time!
