Could Eastern Europe Be the Best Budget-Friendly Travel Destination?
Last summer, Jeff and I embarked on an adventure through Eastern Europe, and it was nothing short of incredible. We often find ourselves drawn to the lesser-explored corners of the continent, and this region did not disappoint. From the vibrant cities of Poland to the stunning Baltic coast, we were consistently delighted.
Poland: History, Heart, and Coastal Delights

Our journey began in Poland, a country steeped in both rich history and undeniable resilience. Warsaw, the capital, is a fascinating blend of beautifully rebuilt historic districts and modern architectural marvels. Krakow captivated us with its medieval charm and poignant reminders of World War II history.
Gdansk, on the Baltic coast, offered a charming mix of maritime history and modern vibrancy. Day trips took us to the relaxing seaside resort of Sopot, the modern port city of Gdynia, and the awe-inspiring Malbork Castle, the largest brick castle in the world. We couldn’t leave Poland without trying pierogi, the delicious Polish dumplings with a variety of fillings.
Bulgaria: Coastal Charms, Mountain Adventures, and Ancient Wonders
Bulgaria surprised us with its diversity. Sunny Beach, on the Black Sea coast, provided a dose of relaxation and seaside fun, but it was the Rila Mountains that stole our hearts. Hiking to the Seven Rila Lakes was breathtaking, both in terms of beauty and physical challenge! We also explored Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, filled with Roman ruins and a charming Old Town. The capital, Sofia, is also a city worth exploring, where even more ancient ruins sit side-by-side with modern buildings.

Romania: Fairytale Castles, the Danube, and Transylvania’s Charm

Romania was like stepping into a storybook. Bran Castle, the supposed inspiration for Dracula’s lair, lived up to its mysterious reputation. Driving the Transfăgărășan road, one of Europe’s most scenic routes, was exhilarating. We were also enchanted by Peleș Castle, a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture nestled in the Carpathian Mountains.A river cruise on the Danube Delta allowed us to admire the unique ecosystem and its wildlife.
The Baltic Beauty: Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia
Venturing northward, the Baltic nations proved to be a true delight. Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, wowed us with its baroque architecture and quirky art scene. Riga, Latvia, is a feast for the eyes with its Art Nouveau district. In Tallinn, Estonia, we wandered cobblestone streets and discovered a delightful blend of medieval and modern. We also took a day trip to the picturesque island of Saaremaa and dipped our toes in the Baltic Sea.

Tips and Takeaways
- Learn a few basic phrases: Even a simple “hello” and “thank you” in the local language go a long way.
- Embrace the unexpected: Eastern Europe will likely challenge your expectations, and that’s part of the fun!
- Try the local cuisine: This is where you’ll taste the true soul of each country.
- Take your time: There’s much to discover – don’t try to cram too much into a short time.
Eastern Europe is full of hidden gems, welcoming people, and a richness of experiences you won’t find elsewhere. We left with full hearts, a camera full of memories, and a deep desire to return someday.
