1. The Mosquito Conundrum: A Bite Out of Your Travel Bliss

Bent Spanner’s recent post about finding effective mosquito repellents without resorting to “pharma stuff” sparked a flurry of comments, with members sharing their experiences, tips, and frustrations with those pesky bloodsuckers.

2. Natural vs. Chemical: The Great Mosquito Repellent Debate

The discussion highlighted a common dilemma: the desire for natural solutions versus the effectiveness of chemical repellents. While some members, like Lesley Taylor and others, are open to natural options, others, like Rosie Macdonald and Kimberly Guanci Nice, emphasized the importance of proven repellents like DEET, especially in areas with mosquito-borne diseases.

3. Avon Skin So Soft: Miracle Cure or Marketing Myth?

Avon Skin So Soft (SSS) emerged as a popular contender in the natural repellent category. While some members, like Lesley Taylor and Linda Jones, swear by its effectiveness, others, like Helen Filbee and Jorene Soto, found it less successful.

  • The Science: Kathleen Lovlie cited a study that found SSS to be no more effective than using nothing at all. Paul Vermeulen even mentioned that Avon itself doesn’t claim mosquito-repelling properties for their product.

4. Other Natural Mosquito Remedies: From Coconut Oil to Garlic and Gin

The discussion also explored a variety of other natural remedies:

  • Coconut Oil: Fiona Howard and Renee Paquin suggested coconut oil as a potential repellent.
  • Brewers Yeast Tablets: Karen Jones shared her experience with Brewers Yeast tablets, believing the smell deters mosquitoes.
  • Lemon Eucalyptus Oil: Cynthia Wilson and Beth Hansen recommended Lemon Eucalyptus oil as an effective natural repellent.
  • Garlic: Iria Camarinha Robertson praised the effectiveness of garlic.
  • Gin and Tonic: John Wilson jokingly (or perhaps not?) suggested this classic cocktail as a mosquito deterrent.

5. Our Experiences: Battling the Bites (and Sometimes Losing)

Jeff and I have encountered our share of mosquito battles in various parts of the world. We’ve tried a variety of repellents, from natural oils to DEET-based sprays, and have found that the effectiveness can vary depending on the type of mosquito and the individual’s “attractiveness” to those pesky insects. During our stay in Ukulhas, Maldives (local island on a budget) we had to use natural mosquito repellents every morning and every evening pretty much every single day.

6. The Serious Side: Mosquito-Borne Illnesses and Prevention

While itchy bites are annoying, the real concern with mosquitoes is the potential for transmitting diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus.

  • Prevention is Key: In areas with mosquito-borne illnesses, it’s crucial to take precautions, including using effective repellents, wearing protective clothing, and sleeping under mosquito nets.
  • Consult Travel Health Professionals: Before traveling to such areas, consult with a travel health professional or your doctor for advice on vaccinations, medications, and preventive measures.

While natural mosquito repellents might offer some protection in certain situations, it’s essential to weigh their effectiveness against the potential risks of mosquito-borne diseases. In areas with high disease risk, proven repellents like DEET or Picaridin are often the safest choice.
